A lively Amsterdam cafe
The moment you’ll enter this cafe, you’ll notice the cosy atmosphere where this cafe is known from. Whether you come by to have a lunch, in the evening for a drink, whether you are with friends, colleagues or family, everybody is welcome in Café Thijssen.
Beside (Dutch and foreign) tourists, the cafe is best visited by neighbourhood inhabitants and people from all over Amsterdam. We understand that Thijssen is quite proud of this feature!
A historical location
As long as people remember, on the spot of this pub, various cafes have been located: Once coffeehouse Mambo and cafe Het Generaaltje were situated at this location, in which the customers could stay for the night in the lodgements upstairs after they have had drunk enough. From 1990, the cafe is fully renovated and the interior that we find in the cafe nowadays was created by then. The name of the cafe is that of the Amsterdam writer and teacher Theo Thijssen, a famous person in the Jordaan. Of Theo Thijssen, a nice statue (Hans Bayens, 1979) is visible in front of the cafe, at the corner of Brouwersgracht and Lindengracht and an intimate museum about this Amsterdam character has been founded in the Jordaan.
Quiz Nights, parties and Ajax
In Café Thijssen, various activities take place! Beside the occasional silent disco parties and nice jazz nights, Ajax matches are being broadcasted for a large audience. And then there is, of course, the weekly Quiz Night! During this quiz, multiple teams battle against each other… the winning team gets the delicious magnums Big Chouffe or beer packages to take with them. The questions of the Quiz Night are being asked in both Dutch and English, so that the evening is accessible and fun for everyone. Check out the next Quiz Night on the website of Café Thijssen.
Although the cafe doesn’t have a dinner card, Thijssen has a nice menu for every moment of the day. For breakfast and lunch they have delicious sandwiches, croissants, soups and toasts on the menu, beside various sweet options to have with a coffee or tea. To accompany your drink at the end of the afternoon or in the evening, Thijssen has lots of cold and warm snacks available.
