In de Waag
Restaurant Cafe In de Waag is located in one of the oldest city gates (1488) of Amsterdam. Today it is the imposing central building at the Nieuwmarkt, which makes it a good meeting point to start or end your day in Amsterdam.
Originall, the city gate was part of the medieval city surrounding walls which ran along the Singel canal, Kloveniersburgwal and the Geldersekade. Nowadays the only remaining city gates are this building In de Waag and the Munttoren. The name 'Waag' was assigned later to the building and comes from one of the functions it has had. 'Waag' comes from the verb 'to weigh' because the building was the weiging house of the city. All goods that were sold in the city had to get weighed at the 'Waag', this way the government could guarantee fair trade within the city center.
Entering Restaurant Cafe In de Waag, you will find many original aspects of the building's interesting history. At night the interior is lit by 300 candles which creates an authentic and romatic setting. When the weater allows you can enjoy the view of the lively Nieuwmarkt, sitting on the terrace.
The building has several room, suitable for small private groups and large private groups. Some rooms can be completely closed and some are semi-private. There is free WiFi within the entire building which makes it a perfect location for inspiring meetings as well.
