Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum

Hash MarihuanaThe oldest and most important museum in the world dedicated to cannabis.

In the middle of a green area of the Red Light District (the museum itself calls it the 'Green Light District') you find this special museum, dedicated to Cannabis Sativa L.: the plant better known as hemp or marihuana. The museum has a remarkable collection showing all kinds of aspects of cannabis, it facilitates scientific research and has important informative function. Therefore, the museum is also an education centre, frequently visited by (high)school groups.

Just one day after the official opening the museum was already closed at the personal order of the Dutch Minister of Justice. However, Ben Dronkers was (and is!) persisting. He took action against the closing and succeeded, the museum was opened again one week later. After a couple of years the Hash Info Museum was renamed to Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum.

The Diversity of Cannabis

We all know that cannabis is being smoked as hash or marihuana, mostly as a recreational drug. Especially in Amsterdam, there is no way around this in the midst of all the coffee shops. But did you know that cannabis is also being used as a medicine for over 5000 years? Over time and in many cultures around the world cannabis got much appreciated for its medical purposes. Besides this, cannabis is a holy plant to many people; it is used during religious ceremonies within different cutlures, from South-East Asia to North America. From hemp (the fiber producing kinds of cannabis that contains less than 0.2% THC) the seeds are used for food products and oil and the fibre for the production of all kinds of things, like eco-friendly clothing , furniture or very firm car particles.
