Museum Our Lord in the Attic

voorkant kleinIn the middle of Amsterdam’s bustling centre stands one of the city’s oldest museums, known as Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder (Museum Our Lord in the Attic). Here visitors get to experience the Dutch Golden Age in a very special way: a 17th-century canal house with a top floor converted into a chapel. Jan Hartman bought this house on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal and the two adjecent building on the Heintje Hoekssteeg 350 years ago. He had the attics of the three houses converted into a Roman Catholic church conforming to the conventions of the day – and yet nothing on the outside would suggest that there was a house of worship inside.

In order to guarantee the preservation of the monument, all residential rooms, stairs and the magnificent attic church have been restored. Where cupboards were converted into display cabinets for works of art decades ago, the process has now been reversed. The display cabinets have been removed and cupboards are cupboards again. The point of departure for the restoration and refurbishment is the original function. Visitors experience what the house church looked like when it was in use in this capacity. Colour, light and furnishings exude the atmosphere of the period in which the last masses took place at the end of the 19th century.

A free audio tour tells the story of the different periods in the house. The new entrance building contains several facilities which the public have come to expect from a modern museum, such as a museum shop and restaurant. Enjoy a coffee and relax in this beautiful new café!
