Theo Thijssen Museum
Kees the boy with his swimming pool trot, there is probably no Dutch adult who doesn’t know him. So many Dutch persons are grown up with this book of Theo Thijssen, about the young Kees and his imaginative fantasy. The Theo Thijssen Museum is a small museum, dedicated to the famous Amsterdam writer, teacher, trade unionist, and social-democratic politician Theo Thijssen (1879-1943). In the museum, in the middle of the Amsterdam Jordaan area, you’ll find manuscripts, first prints, pictures, sketches, video and audio data and personal items of Thijssen.
When you are in the neighbourhood and you have heard of Theo Thijssen, it is worth it to take a look in this museum. The entrance fee clearly cannot withhold you from visiting it: € 3,00 per (adult) person and € 2,00 per child (please pay with cash money).
Exhibitions, store and guided walks
Beside the permanent exhibition, which illustrates Thijssen’s own life, different temporary exhibitions give an impression of the social environment and fields of work (the daily life in the Jordaan area during the end of the last century, the education in Thijssen’s time, socialism and politics in the first half of the 20th century).
The museum sells various items; not only the books of and over Theo Thijssen (the English translation “Kees, the boy” has been published lately!), but also nice examples about the Jordaan neighbourhood and other articles, like post cards, beautiful prints and a linen bag with Theo Thijssen on it.
The museum organizes guided tours through Amsterdam on regular base with Theo Thijssen as main theme. These guided walking tour will take about 2,5 hours and cost € 7,50 - € 10,00 per person.
Become a friend of Theo Thijssen
The incomes of the museum (sale of books, entrance fees and walking tour tickets) are not covering the costs of this museum. Therefore, the museum cannot survive without the commitment of many volunteers and sponsors. All contributions, never mind how small, are very welcome, but anyone who donates € 10,00 or more, becomes member of the Friends of Theo Thijssen: they receive two times per year the Theo Thijssen Bulletin and have free entrance to the museum. Do you want to become Friend of Theo Thijssen as well to support this small special museum?
